Preventing & Responding to Sexual Violence

Read our blog post on Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and I can’t help but think about the recent statistics which indicate that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced physical violence from an intimate partner. I also think about how widespread sexual violence is in this country, and even in this state. Nationally, nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men have been raped at some point in their lives, and 80% of female victims experienced their first rape before the age of 25. Many of these rapes are perpetrated by an intimate partner or someone known to the victim. And just last year in Georgia, there were a total of 2,050 rapes reported to law enforcement. However, if only 39% of all rapes and other types of sexual assault are ever reported to law enforcement, this means that the number reported last year is not even half of what may actually be occurring.
